Further, zombietime seems unable to recognize what is a somewhat speculative discussion about competing factors in determining global temperatures based on the science of the day.; Holdren and Ehrlich mention that temperatures had decreased degrees C 1940-1965 and that a much, much greater decrease of 4 degrees C “would probably be sufficient” to trigger an ice age. They discuss the role of greenhouse gases and do, in fact, overemphasize the role of burning fossil and nuclear fuels in warming temperatures. zombietime somehow interprets this as Holdren and Ehrlich predicting “probable likelihood” of a coming ice age.
All contributions will be evaluated according to specific criteria by an independent jury composed of professors, corporate executives and entrepreneurs. The authors of the best 100 contributions qualify as Leaders of Tomorrow and will be invited by the ISC to the next St. Gallen Symposium. You qualify as a semi-finalist to compete for the prestigious award 2018 if your essay makes it in the top 20. You will be asked by mid-March the very latest to pitch the essence of your essay in a 3-minute video presentation. Based upon the quality of both the essay and the video pitch, the jury selects the six finalists who will compete for the award against each other on the symposium’s big stage. The award will be bestowed to those finalists who show the very best performances both on the essay and on the stage in St. Gallen.
The first paragraph or so of an essay is usually the most important part of the whole essay to get "just right". Not only is it an opportunity to grab the reader's attention, but also a chance to set the agenda for the rest of the essay in terms of tone and content. Strictly speaking, there is no single "right" way to begin an essay — just as it's possible to write essays about countless subjects, so too is it possible to begin an essay in countless ways. However, most good beginnings to essays share certain qualities which, if taken into account, can greatly improve essay intros that may otherwise be lacking. See Step 1 below to get started.
